Hi, Clive.
you seem to be doing ok. As you are in the UK and I am in Ireland the best advice I can give you is to get in touch with a local falconer who would have a good food supply. You probably know not to feed anything cooked or salted such as bacon. Find a local falconer or look up honeybrook farm as they deliver frozen mice etc. But for one little kestrel this might be cost prohibitive, but then again honeybrook farm might put you in touch with a local falconer. I am sure you there is a local bird of prey rehabilitation centre that will be happy to help. Thank god for the web! And good luck with the little chap,

I have just been given a young female kestrel to look after. It was found walking along the main road. It appears not to be injured and can fly short distances. It seems to be quite domiciled and is presently perched on the back of a kitchen chair. I have tried to feed it thin strips of chicken and beef but it seems disinterested. Can you give me suggestions on what to feed it other than freshly caught mice? Finally, are there any organisations that look after these immature raptors? My address is Beacon Farm, Mundesley Road, Trimingham, Norfolk NR11 8DZ tel: 01263 833675. I should be grateful if you would advise. Best wishes, Clive

This was a wonderful article, kestrels do deserve more credit! I'm in the U.S. and as a kid one summer I came by one that had fallen from the nest. I trained it for a mere 2 weeks before it escaped on me, or so I thought, it turns out we hunted together every day for the rest of the summer. He was entirely free but loved hunting with me none the less. I'd go out to work in the garden, where there were many grasshoppers, I'd hear him call, so I raised my hand and he would land then get that determine little look on his face. We walked about until I kicked something up and he took off after it, sometimes even bringing it right back to me and happily ripping right into it there on my first. Sooner or later he must have migrated or gotten frightened off by one of the larger hawks in the area, but I will never forget him. I don't think that was a normal thing that happened between us, but it sure was amazing. I'd love to find the time to take up falconry the proper way if I ever get a chance.

Thanks for your comment. I just think it is important to write something worth reading. I know there is meant to be a certain amount of waffling on a blog but i find it hard to get time to just sit and write, as looking after the birds keep me quite busy.
